MonoMate Featured in Production Expert
Mike Thornton over at Production Expert just published a roundup of tools for dealing with stereo files that aren’t actually stereo — the dual mono problem that wastes disk space and CPU in sessions everywhere. MonoMate made the list alongside two other tools in the space.
It’s a solid write-up of the problem itself, and if you’ve never thought about how many of your “stereo” files are really mono signals in disguise, it’s worth a read.
What Production Expert highlighted
The article walks through three standalone tools that detect and convert dual mono files: StereoMonoizer, MonoMate, and Channel Utilities. Each takes a slightly different approach, and Mike gives a fair breakdown of what they do.
For MonoMate specifically, the article covers the sample-by-sample channel comparison, support for both interleaved and split (.L/.R) files, and detection of edge cases like phase-inverted dual mono and silent channels. These are the cases that trip up simpler detection — and the reason MonoMate exists in the first place.
Where MonoMate fits
If you’re comparing the three tools in that roundup, here’s the quick version:
- MonoMate is $29 for a two-machine license, runs on both macOS and Windows, and catches edge cases that basic L/R comparison misses. It was built by an audio engineer (me) to solve a problem I kept running into on real sessions.
- StereoMonoizer is $49 and has been around the longest. It recently shipped an update for Apple Silicon compatibility after a long gap without updates.
- Channel Utilities is free but Mac-only. If you’re on a Mac and want a no-cost option, it’s there. If you’re on Windows, it’s not.
All three solve the same core problem. MonoMate is the most affordable paid option, the only one that was cross-platform from day one, and the only one with polarity-inverted dual mono detection — which matters if your files ever end up in a mono playback context like broadcast, phone speakers, or club systems.
